Joseph Arthur Verille


Joseph A. Verille was born October 10, 1923, in Rye, New York, his father, Joseph, was 36 and his mother, Catherine, was 32. He had five brothers Louis, Leonard, John, Daniel and Paul and two sisters Florence and Violet. In Rye his family lived at 23 High Street and were members of the Church of the Resurrection. He attended Rye schools and Joseph was a Rye High School Graduate, Class of 1943. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.


Joseph A. Verille Wins Promotion On Flying Fortress
AN EIGHTH AIR FORCE BOMBER STATION, England.
Promotion of Joseph A Verille, from corporal to sergeant has been announced at the Eighth Air Force Flying Fortress station. Sergt, Verille is tail gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, helping to bomb Nazi war plants and military installations as a member of Lt. Col. Chester C. Cox 388th Bomb Group, The Rye flyer is the son of Mr and Mis. Joseph Verille of 23 High St., Rye. He entered the the AAF in July 1943

The 388th BG began combat operations on 17 July 1943 by attacking an aircraft factory in Amsterdam. The unit functioned primarily as a strategic bombardment Organization until the war ended.

Targets included industries, naval installations, oil storage plants, refineries, and communications centers in Germany, France, Poland, Belgium, Norway, Romania, and the Netherlands. Operations also included support and interdictory missions.

It helped prepare for the invasion of Normandy by attacking military installations in France, and on D-Day struck coastal guns, field batteries, and transportation. Altogether the 388th flew 331 raids to European targets.
